If you don't like crowded, loud beach hotels, we recommend our isolated beach cottage on Playa Cacao, five minutes from Golfito. It is not a luxury home but a simple, open wooden house surrounded by 25 acres of jungle and only accessible by boat. It is the last house on the coast for miles. The garden with its palm trees, heliconias, hibiscus, and orchids attracts monkeys, parrots, toucans, coatis and racoons. The virtually private, 500 meter long sand and pebble beach is reached by a short trail.  The two-story hut with a roof of palm leaves and open windows belongs to Michael Schnitzler, owner of Esquinas Rainforest Lodge. The living-kitchen area is equipped with refrigerator, electric stove and oven, coffee maker and food processor., and opens onto a covered veranda with hammocks. Rainwater tanks feed the cold-water shower and flush-toilet; drinking water is available at the beach.
